Surviving is much easier if you have electric power. Where I live, the power goes out a lot, and in the winter it can get mighty cold, not to mention dark! So a backup power system is probably a good idea.
Home Power magazine has been around for many years. Mr. Solar shows you how to get off the power grid, and make your own electricity from the sun. Sunelco-- The Sun Electric Company also shows you how to get off the grid, and they've got a GREAT catalog/manual for $5, too! Get it! Jade Mountain will sell you all sorts of 12-volt DC appliances and information.
